Democracy or Republic?

Wow, it has been over a year since I have posted a new blog here. I have been focusing on my other blog, "A Christian's Role in Politics". I want to keep that blog dedicated to that topic only, but I recently heard of a topic that I could not resist.

Do we have a Democracy or a Republic? You might be surprised at how many people do not know the difference.

In a true Democracy, what the people want, the people get. It is basically mob rule. If 51% of the people wanted to legalize rape, they could.

John Adams: "Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide" (1814).

In a Republic, they people still vote using the Democratic process, but they cannot just vote for anything they want. A Republic sets guidelines for the people. Our guidelines are drawn in the Constitution. This is simliar to a teach saying: "You can write a report on any book you would like to on this list." The last four words are the important ones. They set the guidelines. I am sure you can imagine a society without guidelines. The Founding Fathers knew that it could never stand.

Today we are in a mess because we have turned our back on history and on the Constitution. We no longer teach the values that Founding Father held dear or the reasoning behind the document that they spent so long in writing. We need to get back to our roots. You can start by reading the Constitution by clicking here.
