Socialism 101

Socialism. The mere mention of it will cause one of two reactions in you. You will either experience extreme disgust and distaste, or you will be indifferent. If you feel indifferent about it, than you definitely need to read further. If you had the first reaction, you still need to read to find out why nobody wants you to mention this word.

Why is this word shunned? Why has it been labeled as off limits? It is merely a description of a type of government. It represents a failed philosophy that has been attempted time and again by dictator after dictator. So why do people continue to try it? What do they stand to gain from thus style of government? Let's dig a little deeper...

First, the definition of the word:

Wikipedia- "Socialism refers to any one of various theories of economic organization advocating state or cooperative ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and a society characterized by equal opportunities/means for all individuals with a more egalitarian method of compensation. Modern socialism originated in the late 18th-century intellectual and working class political movement that criticized the effects of industrialization and private ownership on society."

My version- Socialism denies the rights of the individuals and pours all assets into one pot to be distributed at the whim of a dictator-style government. It's the classic "all-for-one, one-for-all" mentality.

So why doesn't it work? Socialism discourages personal risk taking, fails to reward a strong work ethic, demoralizes entire societies, destroys individual responsibility, and makes everyone equal: equally miserable.

Sure, it has been tried in other countries, but supporters always say that it just has not been done properly. Have we tried it here? Yes. During the early years of American Colonization, many small communities tried a socialistic style government and everyone of them failed. When on person is compelled to involuntarily work for the sake of another, that person will inevitably work less or refuse to work at all. So you make an entire society into under-achievers and soon the until house of cards will fall into a mess of mutiny, looting, rioting, and perhaps even war. If you have not done so already, please read my blog on "Our Constitution vs. Communism". It will explain the 10 pillars of communism, or "the ten steps to communism" as written by Karl Marx.

So what is the difference between Socialism, Communism, Marxism, etc? They are all very similar and are often used interchangeably. A decent article of more detail can be found here.

So what is the point of this article? To protect you with information. We are currently headed down this path. With claims that "Capitalism has failed" and government control expanding daily, we need to guard ourselves and friends and family in this ideological battle.

Take a moment or two to ponder this thought: Capitalism has not failed today and has never failed. True Capitalism is not meddled with by Gov't and bureaucracies. Our Gov't has been meddling in affairs for years. Power-hungry politicians, over-bearing bureaucrats, and Big Government has failed, not individual responsibility and Capitalism.

  1. As a US Navy veteran, I have traveled to 8 different countries, and as a civilian, I have been to Canada dozens of times. Not that travel makes a person smarter. You do not have to be a well-traveled person to be educated on Socialism.
